Our MMath Mathematics degree provides a balanced study of the most important aspects of maths so that you can achieve a thorough understanding of the fundamentals to help prepare you for a successful career.

Mathematics is an exciting subject which is not only fascinating to study in its own right but also underpins a great variety of endeavours such as science, commerce and industry.

A maths degree is actively sought by employers and opens many doors to subsequent employment and further study. Its study gives students the numerical abilities, logical thinking and analytical skills that are crucial to the success of diverse organisations within commerce, banking and finance, management an industry. Through innovative teaching we equip our students with these skills while also opening up the many facets of this rich and stimulating discipline.

Over the first two years of the MMath Mathematics degree, guided by the expertise of ºÚÁÏÍø's academic staff, you will gain broad coverage of the core aspects of mathematics, including analysis, linear algebra, geometry, probability and statistics, complex variables, mechanics and calculus of variations. In the final two years you will choose modules from a range of options in pure and applied mathematics and statistics, as well as developing your research skills by undertaking a year-long project in the final year.

What's the difference between MMath and BSc?

Our BSc courses will equip you with the numerical abilities, logical thinking and analytical skills required to work in a diverse range of roles within a range of organisations. If you have a desire to work as a professional mathematician in industry, commerce, or higher education, or pursue a research career, the MMath course will provide you with the more advanced level of study needed to work towards your aims.

Progress on the MMath course is dependent on a high level of attainment at the end of Years 1 and 2. Transfer to the MMath course from the BSc course may also be possible for students performing sufficiently well.

The MMath and BSc courses in Mathematics are the same over Years 1 and 2.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is located in the Schofield Building, which is based centrally on the University campus. The building has recently undergone a £4.3 million refurbishment to equip it with dedicated resources for mathematics students.

As a student within the Department of Mathematical Sciences you will benefit from 24/7 access to state-of-the-art computer labs in the Schofield Building and also from our co-location with the Mathematics Learning Support Centre.

The MMath carries the option of a year-long industry placement or studying abroad with one of our partner universities, enabling you to broaden your horizons and gain valuable skills and experience.

The MMath and BSc courses in Mathematics are the same over years 1 and 2. The BSc course presents a balanced study of the most important aspects of mathematics so that you achieve a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of the subject, while the greater depth of the MMath course will prepare you for a career in research.

The aims of this module are to introduce elementary numerical methods and associated theory, to teach students how to implement numerical methods on the computer and to gain experience in interpreting numerical results.

The aims of this module are:

  • to introduce the notion of convergence as this applies to sequences and series
  • to introduce the notion of continuous function of one real variable
  • to provide a firm basis for future modules in which the idea of convergence and continuity is used

Linear Algebra 1

The aims of this module are:

  • to introduce basic ideas of vector spaces
  • to introduce linear transformations and explain their relationship to matrices
  • to provide the basic methods of linear algebra for other modules throughout all mathematics-based programmes

Mathematical Thinking

The aims of this module are:

  • to develop logical skills
  • to provide students with an appropriate language for the study of mathematics
  • to introduce different types of mathematical proof

Mathematical Methods 1

The aims of this module are:

  • to introduce basic ideas of differential calculus and integration
  • to provide practice in common techniques used in mathematical applications
  • to provide the basic background material for all mathematics-based programmes

Introductory Probability and Statistics

The aims of this module are to:

  • introduce students to the basic concepts of probability and statistics.
  • illustrate the relevance of these concepts to practical problem solving.

  • to introduce elements of analytic geometry of conics and quadrics
  • to introduce the elements of group theory

Mathematical Methods 2

The aims of this module are:

  • to introduce basic ideas of differentiation and integration in several variables and differential equations
  • to illustrate some of the connections between differential calculus and applications

Mechanics

The aims of this module are to introduce the basic ideas of kinematics and particle dynamics, connecting the mathematics with physical applications.

The module aims to develop students' ability to communicate mathematical content clearly and in a manner that is appropriate to the target audience.

Complex Analysis

The aim of this module is to introduce students to the classical results in the theory of analytic functions of a complex variable.

ODEs and Calculus of Variations

The aims of this module are:

  • to introduce the main ideas and techniques of the qualitative theory of ODEs and the Calculus of Variations
  • to teach students how to apply these ideas and techniques to the study of systems of ODEs and variational problems

Analytical Dynamics

The aims of this module are to introduce the students to the basic notions and methods of classical analytical dynamics.

Elements of Topology

The aim of this module is to give a grounding in the central ideas of topology, sufficient for the main applications in geometry, analysis and mathematical physics.

The aim of this module is to explore fundamental algebraic structures and their connection to solving equations.

Formal Languages and Theory of Computation

This module provides an introduction to the mathematical theory of formal languages - i.e. sets of sequences of symbols.

It is the primary goal of the module to develop a student's knowledge of various concepts of defining formal languages, and to raise awareness of their relation to a range of fields of application, such as data mining, programming languages and natural language processing.

In addition, the module shall explain the intrinsic connection of formal language theory to the mathematical foundations of computer science, thus deepening a student's understanding of the nature of computation.

Introduction to Algebraic Geometry

The aims of this module are to:

  • introduce the basics of algebraic geometry
  • compare the structure of affine and projective varieties
  • analyse examples and their properties including dimension and singularities

Number Theory

The aim of this module is to provide students with fundamental methods of classical number theory and some of its diverse applications.

Introduction to Dynamical Systems

The aim of this module is to introduce students to the notions and methods of the theory of dynamical systems with an emphasis on its applications.

Asymptotic Methods

The aims of this module are:

  • to introduce the concept of small and large parameters in equations and how they can be exploited to simplify difficult mathematical problems
  • to introduce a wide range of approximation techniques to analyse differential equations and integrals

Operational Research

The aims of this module are:

  • to introduce students to the nature of operational research and its techniques
  • to study linear programming, its applications and associated algorithms

Graph Theory

The aims of this module are to introduce students to modern concepts and methods of combinatorics and graph theory.

Stochastic Methods in Finance

The aims of this module are:

  • to provide students with a rigorous mathematical introduction to the modern financial theory of security markets in discrete and continuous time models
  • to give students a solid theoretical background in the derivatives industry in discrete and continuous time models

Functional Analysis

The aim of this module is to create awareness of the power and range of abstract mathematical concepts through a basic introduction to the methods of functional analysis.

Bayesian Statistics and Markov Chain Monte Carlo Methods

The aim of this module is:

  • to introduce the R statistical programming language for implementing methods using real data

Studies in Science and Mathematics Education

The aims of the module are:

  • to develop a range of skills within students and provide an early introduction to teaching for those interested in pursuing it, or a related field, as a career.

Advanced Complex Analysis

The aims of this module are to introduce students to more advanced complex variable methods and demonstrate how these can be applied to sum series, evaluate integrals and define special functions.

Representation Theory

The aims of this module are to:

  • introduce the group representations as symmetries of vector spaces
  • examine the special characteristics of the category of representations
  • help students appreciate and use the connections between different areas of mathematics

Linear Differential Equations

The aims of this module are:

  • that students gain familiarity with linear ODEs with non-constant coefficients
  • to introduce linear PDEs with constant and non-constant coefficients

Vibrations and Waves

The aim of this module is to investigate physical phenomena that involve vibrations and waves using appropriate mathematical tools.

Elliptic Curves

The aims of this module are to:

  • introduce students to the geometry of elliptic curves
  • illustrate the difference between complex geometry and Diophantine geometry over the rational numbers

Game Theory

The aims of this module are:

  • to introduce rigorous mathematical tools which are useful in economics analysis
  • to give students a solid mathematical background in game theoretic models

Static and Dynamic Optimisation

The aim of this module is to gain familiarity with theory and techniques of static optimisation and dynamic optimisation.

Computational Methods in Finance

This module aims to:

  • introduce numerical methods and associated theory for modelling of financial options
  • teach students how to implement such numerical methods on computers

Stochastic Calculus and Theory of Pricing

The aim of this module is to introduce students to:

  • the basics of stochastic calculus by using Brownian motion as an integrator

The University Language Centre provides a range of modules in French, German, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese from beginners' level upwards. You may take these language modules as part of your degree, enter the programme at your level of competence and work upwards one semester at a time.

Through your language modules you will practise a range of transferable skills, from face-to-face communication and presentation skills, to producing multi-media materials, you will develop skills in your chosen language in small, interactive classes, and will gain greater cultural competence as you move up the levels.

A variety of assessment methods are used on this course.

Depending on the nature of the material, some modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework and examination (for example 25% coursework and 75% examination), whilst other modules are assessed 100% by coursework or 100% by examination.

A professional placement year is an excellent way to add value to your degree.

It enables you to put your skills and knowledge into and giving you substantial industry experience that can really help your CV stand out in the competitive market for graduate jobs.

A variety of industrial, commercial and research companies have received our students in recent years and good relations have been established between these companies and the Mathematical Sciences Department. We are able to assist you to obtain suitable placements but the final responsibility rests with you.

Additional award

This course comes with the option to undertake a professional placement for a year, at the end of which you will gain a Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS). This is an additional award to the final qualification you will receive once you have successfully completed this course.

Additional award

This course comes with the option to study abroad for a year, at the end of which you will gain a Diploma in International Studies (DIntS). This is an additional award to the final qualification you will receive once you have successfully completed this course.

In addition to our Christmas lecture each year, the Department hosts the annual Sir David Wallace lecture that in recent years has seen such esteemed mathematicians and physicists as Sir Michael Atiyah, Cedric Villani and Sir Michael Berry delivering stimulating public lectures on campus.

Selection

Applicants are usually selected solely on the basis of their UCAS application, but in exceptional cases, an interview may be required. If applicants are made an offer of a place, they will be invited to visit the department giving them the opportunity to meet staff and students, see facilities and get an insight into what it is like to be a student at ºÚÁÏÍø.

Many of our courses receive a large number of applications for each available place.  We cannot unfortunately always make offers to all applicants who are predicted to achieve/have achieved grades in line with our advertised typical offers.

Australia

Typical offers for students from Australia are based on the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR). Typically, we would require a score between 85.00 and 94.00. For students from Queensland, requirements from the Overall Position (OP) would typically be between 8 and 4.

Further to the above, students would normally be required to pass one of the following qualifications:

  • Northern Territory Certificate of Education (NTCE)

For students taking the Austrian Reifeprüfung (Matura), we typically require an average score between 2.2 and 1.2 from 6 written or spoken exams. Where courses have specific subject requirements, a score of or 1 will normally be required in each.

Belgium

The Certificat d’Enseignement Secondaire Supérieur (CESS) and Diploma van Secundair Onderwijs (DSO) are both acceptable qualifications for direct entry into first year undergraduate courses. We typically require an overall score ranging from 75% to 85%. Where the 20 point marking scale is used, we would typically require marks between 15/20 and 17/20.

Specific subject marks may be required for some courses and where this is the case, this should be studied as a 4-hour subject. Where courses require achievement in GCSE Maths, we would normally look for a score of 50% or higher in Maths within the CESS or DSO.

Cyprus

The Apolytirion is not accepted for direct entry to the University when studied on its own. However, we are happy to consider students taking the Apolytirion alongside either 1 or 2 A Levels. For courses with typical offer requirements of ‘ABB’, we would typically require 19.5 in the Apolytirion alongside an ‘A’ at A Level or 18.0 in the Apolytirion alongside ‘AB’ at A Level. Students taking the Greek Apolyterion are normally required to also take the Panhellenic Exams. Typical offers are based on the General Access Grade in the Panhellenics and range from 16.5 to 19.0 depending on the course applied for. Students applying for Science or Engineering courses would generally be expected to have followed the Sciences direction. For students studying in the USA, typical offers for entry onto undergraduate level courses are based on obtaining 3.2/4.0 GPA in the High School Graduation Diploma, in addition to a combination of any three of the following:

  • Advanced Placement (AP) Exam
  • IB Higher Levels
  • College level class credit (should normally be taken in Grade 12 for one semester, and be equivalent to 3 credits/units in an academic subject)
  • Honors classes (should be taken for a full academic year in either Grade 11 or Grade 12)

Where courses have a specific A Level subject requirement this must be achieved in the relevant AP exam or IB Higher Level. Where AP is used to meet an A Level Maths subject requirement AP Calculus BC would be required.
