The role of a sport and exercise psychologist is vital to the world of sport and integral to population health.

Sport psychologists apply psychological knowledge to improve coaching, athlete learning and elite performance. They help athletes in many ways including staying motivated, managing competition pressure and coping with injury and mental health issues. Exercise psychologists, on the other hand, work to encourage the general population to engage in regular sport and exercise. Exercise psychologists also promote the mental health benefits of exercise and its capacity to reduce depression and anxiety and improve mood and well-being.

What you'll study

Beyond studying all major areas of psychological science, this BPS-accredited course focuses on the application of psychology to sport, performance and exercise environments. Combining innovative and interactive teaching methods with independent research, students will gain knowledge and skills related to pursuing a career as a psychologist specialising in sport and supporting athlete performance, health and wellbeing.

Semester 1

Compulsory modules

Learning to be a Psychologist

The aims of this module are to:

  • equip students with the academic skills required for their psychology degree
  • support students to understand and manage the transition to university education
  • develop students' awareness of, and performance in, core skills required for academic study in psychology
  • introduce students to different and related areas of study available in psychology
  • enable students to become aware of and develop their academic and personal skills through Personal Best (a development programme available to all students at ºÚÁÏÍø).

Research Skills A

The aim of this module is to provide students with core training in the theoretical and practical aspects of conducting both quantitative and qualitative research in psychology.

Psychology of the Early Years

The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of some of the central concepts, theories and studies related to the psychology of the early years.

Semester 2

Compulsory modules

Foundations of Sport and Exercise Psychology

The aim of this module is to develop students' understanding of some of the key concepts underpinning the psychology of sport and exercise participation and performance.

Cognitive Research

The aim of this module is for students to gain an understanding of the principal areas of experimental cognitive psychology, including perception, attention, language, learning, memory, problem solving and decision making. This includes developing and practicing skills relating to designing and reporting experiments in cognitive psychology.

Understanding the Brain

The aim of this module is to give students a fundamental understanding of the brain and nervous system in terms of their structure and functions. The module also aims to introduce students to the underpinnings of our perception of the world around us, and our responses to this information.

Semester 1

Understanding Human Diversity

The aim of this module is for students to gain an understanding of selected factors and theories that underpin the diverse nature of human behaviour and to apply these to real-world contexts.

Psychology Across the Lifespan

The aim of this module is to apply psychological concepts, theories and research findings across the lifespan.

Expert Performance in Sport

The aim of this module is to further students' understanding of the major psychological determinants and perceptual-cognitive factors underpinning sport expertise.

This module builds on the topics covered in Research Skills A and aims to provide students with the necessary skills to conduct and analyse rigorous independent psychological research.

Applied Cognitive Research

This module will examine applications of cognitive research and how the research can be used within real-life settings.

Current Themes in Sport and Exercise Psychology

The aim of this module is to develop students' understanding of key theoretical and empirical perspectives that explain contemporary sport and exercise psychology topics.

The aim of this module is for students to demonstrate a more advanced and critical understanding of the theories, strategies and interventions which underpin the real-world application of exercise psychology.

Learning in Early Childhood

The aim of this module is to develop students' understanding of development and learning in young children. This module will consider cognitive, social and environmental influences on children's development and explore how children learn in informal and formal settings.

Advanced Experimental and Qualitative Design and Analysis

This module aims to provide students with advanced knowledge and understanding of both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Students will develop their applied research skills to a higher level.

The Psychology of Eating Behaviour

The overall aim of this module is to develop students' understanding of human eating behaviour from a variety of perspectives. Beginning with an introduction to appetite regulation, this module will explore developmental, social, cognitive, and emotional factors associated with individual differences in eating behaviours in both adults and children.

Semester 2

Applied Psychology in Competitive Sport

The aims of this module are for students to demonstrate a more advanced and critical understanding of the psychological approaches, issues, strategies, and skills that are relevant in applied practice; and to explore the professional characteristics and vocational skills required of an effective sport and exercise psychologist.

Educational Neuroscience

The aim of this module is to develop students' understanding of how studying the brain can inform learning and teaching. Beginning with an introduction to methods for studying brain structure and function, this module will explore brain function in typical and atypical learners and consider the implications of these findings for the classroom.

Clinical Psychology

The aim of this module is to provide students with knowledge about a range of mental health problems, their aetiology and insight into current treatment approaches.

Parenting and Socialisation

The aims of this module are to: introduce students to the topic of parenting; explore factors which may influence parenting styles, practices and behaviours; and, examine the impact that parenting behaviours may have on children's socialisation and development.

Opportunity to learn new languages

You can give your degree an international edge by taking credit-bearing language modules as part of your course.

The University Language Centre provides a range of modules in French, German, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese from beginners' level upwards. You may take these language modules as part of your degree, enter the programme at your level of competence and work upwards one semester at a time.

Through your language modules you will practise a range of transferable skills, from face-to-face communication and presentation skills, to producing multi-media materials, you will develop skills in your chosen language in small, interactive classes, and will gain greater cultural competence as you move up the levels.

Our Sport and Exercise Psychology programme is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the key areas of psychology and sport and exercise psychology.

Using a variety of teaching styles and sessions, students have an opportunity to apply their psychological knowledge into the world of performance and exercise, as well as conduct a research project in their final year. A year-long optional placement is another chance to further one's understanding of the environments in which sport and exercise psychologists operate.

How you'll be assessed

Multiple assessment types are used to develop key transferable skills which then can be used in graduate careers.

Depending on the nature of the material, some modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework and examination (for example 50% coursework and 50% examination), whilst other modules are assessed by 100% coursework or 100% by examination.

Coursework is based on a variety of tasks including individual essays, projects, in-class tests, lab reports, contribution in tutorials, group work and presentations.

Our study support services and extensive resources are designed to help you succeed during your studies. You will also have access to an academic tutor as well as student course representatives to help you through your course.

Placement year

Students taking the four-year course spend their third year on placement in an approved occupation relevant to their degree.

Although it is your responsibility to arrange the placement, considerable support is available. Students have had placements in the UK and abroad, with schools, NHS Trusts, prisons, the Home Office, Premier League football clubs, health and wellness organisations, sportswear companies, and various consultancies and companies.

Additional award

This course comes with the option to undertake a professional placement for a year, at the end of which you will gain a Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS). This is an additional award to the final qualification you will receive once you have successfully completed this course.

Study abroad

If you are interested in travelling whilst you study, there are options to study overseas with our partner universities. By choosing this course you'll have the option to take advantage of this exciting opportunity, giving you the chance to not only experience new cultures and visit exciting destinations, but also to expand your learning experience. The length of a study abroad placement would be confirmed by your School or Department.

There are options to develop your language skills by spending the year between your second and final year studying at one of our partner universities around the world. Additionally, you could combine a shorter business placement abroad with one semester studying in a partner university taught in English.

Additional award

There is no flexibility in this requirement. However, we will consider a grade C in Level 3 Core Maths as a suitable alternative.

GCSE English Language

If you have achieved Grade 5 in GCSE English Language, we can still consider an application if you have Grade 6 or above in GCSE English Literature

If you have achieved Grade 4 or 5 in GCSE English Language, we can still consider an application if you have a contextual indicator. Please refer to our Contextual Admissions Policy for further information on contextual indicators used by the University.

Reduced contextual offer

Selection

Applicants are usually selected solely on the basis of their UCAS application, but in exceptional cases, an interview may be required. If applicants are made an offer of a place, they will be invited to visit the department giving them the opportunity to meet staff and students, see facilities and get an insight into what it is like to be a student at ºÚÁÏÍø.

Many of our courses receive a large number of applications for each available place.  We cannot unfortunately always make offers to all applicants who are predicted to achieve/have achieved grades in line with our advertised typical offers.

Australia

Typical offers for students from Australia are based on the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR). Typically, we would require a score between 85.00 and 94.00. For students from Queensland, requirements from the Overall Position (OP) would typically be between 8 and 4.

Further to the above, students would normally be required to pass one of the following qualifications:

The Certificat d’Enseignement Secondaire Supérieur (CESS) and Diploma van Secundair Onderwijs (DSO) are both acceptable qualifications for direct entry into first year undergraduate courses. We typically require an overall score ranging from 75% to 85%. Where the 20 point marking scale is used, we would typically require marks between 15/20 and 17/20.

Specific subject marks may be required for some courses and where this is the case, this should be studied as a 4-hour subject. Where courses require achievement in GCSE Maths, we would normally look for a score of 50% or higher in Maths within the CESS or DSO.

Where courses have specific subject requirements, a score of 4 or 5 will normally be required in each. For courses that require Maths as part of their A Level offer, this should be taken at extended level in the Matura.

Cyprus

The Apolytirion is not accepted for direct entry to the University when studied on its own. However, we are happy to consider students taking the Apolytirion alongside either 1 or 2 A Levels. For courses with typical offer requirements of ‘ABB’, we would typically require 19.5 in the Apolytirion alongside an ‘A’ at A Level or 18.0 in the Apolytirion alongside ‘AB’ at A Level. For students taking the Bevis for Studentereksamen (STX), typical offers range from 8.0 to 10.5 in the weighted average mark from the STX. Some courses may require marks (either 10 or 12) in specific Level A subjects.

United States of America

For students studying in the USA, typical offers for entry onto undergraduate level courses are based on obtaining 3.2/4.0 GPA in the High School Graduation Diploma, in addition to a combination of any three of the following:

  • Advanced Placement (AP) Exam
  • IB Higher Levels
  • College level class credit (should normally be taken in Grade 12 for one semester, and be equivalent to 3 credits/units in an academic subject)
  • Honors classes (should be taken for a full academic year in either Grade 11 or Grade 12)

Where courses have a specific A Level subject requirement this must be achieved in the relevant AP exam or IB Higher Level. Where AP is used to meet an A Level Maths subject requirement AP Calculus BC would be required.

UK tuition fees align with the applicable fee caps set by the UK government, and as such they are subject to changes made to the agreed cap in a specific year. Tuition fees are reviewed annually by the University and are likely to increase to take into account inflationary pressures.

Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessment and operating University facilities such as the library, IT equipment and other support services. University fees and charges can be paid in advance and there are several methods of payment, including online payments and payment by instalment.

Additional costs

While the cost of your tuition covers lots of things, it doesn’t cover everything. For instance this course doesn’t cover the cost of any stationary, printing, books or re-assessments which you might need.
