Overview
The development of new and improved materials is at the heart of a huge range of technologies. These can be from the objects we use every day such as food packaging, novel batteries and fuel cells, power electric vehicles and more advanced materials for biomedical applications, such as implants.
Our Materials Science and Engineering degree will give you the opportunity to deepen your knowledge and understanding of the scientific, engineering and design aspects of materials, their structure, properties, processing, in-service behaviour and environmental impact.
At ºÚÁÏÍø, our course will take you from the fundamental science and engineering of materials to the cutting-edge of the subject. During your time with us, you will have access to our state-of-the-art experimental labs to complement your lectures. You will be taught by world-leading academics whose influence extends outside of the lecture theatre. In year three, you will complete a research project on a specific topic of interest supervised by a member of the academic staff and potentially in collaboration with an industrial partner.
Our degree will prepare you for careers in a wide range of sectors. These include aerospace, automotive, biomedical, energy and sustainability, consumer goods, sports, and defence. Our graduates go on to work in large and small companies in the UK and internationally. Some remain in the higher education sector to continue their research into Materials Engineering.
What's the difference between MEng and BEng?
The first two years of a BEng or MEng share the same content, format and structure, with a good mix of theory, application and practical content from day one. The MEng differs from the BEng course in the third and fourth years by offering the opportunity to study technical and management topics at a more advanced level. It is possible to transfer from a BEng to an MEng from the start of the course up to the end of the second year, providing that the transfer progression criteria have been met.

The advances in materials for surface engineering have also allowed for a more fuel-efficient vehicle design. The Department of Materials houses leading facilities for teaching and research into materials. This includes our industry-leading ºÚÁÏÍø Materials Characterisation Centre which can characterise materials' structure and properties at all length scales.
The University has invested heavily in teaching facilities with a £17 million STEMLab, 3500 m2 of modern student-focused laboratory facilities specifically reserved for teaching. These include science and engineering laboratories, workshop and electronics facilities, and design and computer suites.

Mathematics for Materials
The aim of this module is to introduce a range of mathematical methods appropriate to the needs of first year materials engineering students.
Experimentation and Practical Skills
The aims of this module are:
- to provide students with the knowledge and practical skills relating to materials testing, and their applications;
- enable students to become aware of and develop their academic, professional and personal skills through Personal Best.
Introductory Materials Science and Processing
The aim of this module is:
- to give students an introduction to engineering materials, their properties and processing
- to provide students with an understanding of the major principles used in determining the properties and structure of materials
- introduction to processing a range of material types from raw material to finished part
- how the processing method can influence the properties of the material.
Thermodynamics and its Applications
The aims of the module are to acquaint students with concepts of differing energies and relationships in processes; to enable them to assess equations and calculate energetics of reactions and processes; and to understand the phase transformations occurring in the manufacture of engineering products.
Computer Aided Engineering
The aims of this module are to:
- Provide an introduction to standards and conventions in engineering drawing;
- Provide an introduction to Computer Aided Design tools;
- Provide an introduction to Computer Aided Engineering through MATLAB;
- Provide an introduction to Computer Aided Manufacturing;
- Develop transferable skills, particularly with respect to oral presentation and group working;
Materials Applications and Engineering Design
The aim of this module is for students to develop an understanding of application of materials to achieve specific performance and engineering design skills with materials appropriately used.
Semester 1 & 2

Materials Modelling
The aims of the module are to introduce the principles of data analysis, modelling and statistics relevant to materials and bioengineering. This comprises selection of appropriate modelling techniques, knowledge of different modelling methods, including their errors, and understanding the correct application of statistical methods for the description and interpretation of data.
Materials Processing
The aim of this module is to introduce the underlying principles determining the relationships between composition, processing, microstructure and properties for a range of materials.
Semester 1

Mathematics and Modelling for Materials
The aims of this module are to extend the range of mathematical methods introduced in MAA301.
Group Design Project
The aims of this module are for the student to:
- understand the product or component design principles and methodologies;
- be able to implement product and component development toolkit computer aided design (CAD), Cambridge Materials Selection (CES), idea search and evaluation, concept development and evaluation, and engineering validation;
- integrate knowledge on product or component analysis and product design with that on customer and business needs, materials properties, manufacture technology, engineering communication into the solution of multi-faceted problems;
- have the opportunity to apply, practise and develop their skills and capability in product design and design communication in a team-based design project.
Materials in Service
The aims of the module are to provide students with knowledge of the industrial applications of materials along with factors that can alter the material properties in service and the implications this has on the lifetime of components.

Introduction to Chemical, Biochemical Processes and Sustainability
The aims of this module are:
- To equip students with core chemistry and biochemistry knowledge related to the Chemical Engineering course.
- To introduce students to industrially significant aspects of chemical/biochemical processes and microbiology.
- To make students aware of engineering ethics.
- To introduce the principles of sustainability (environmental, social, economic) to chemical/biochemical processes.
Vehicle Loading and Suspensions
The aim of this module is for students to understand the engineering requirements necessary to design road vehicles, with particular focus on vehicle loading and suspension design.

Plant Engineering
The aims of this module are to develop knowledge and understanding of stress, strain, bending and force balances, their relation to the sizing, design and form of structures/components under load(s), the methods required to calculate stresses in example structures/components and their implementation for safe design, the selection of materials for strength and chemical plant layout.
Fracture Mechanics of Materials
The aims of this module are to provide students with a basic knowledge of criteria which determine how materials may fail in service, together with an understanding of properties and measurements related to materials failure and fracture.
Materials Characterisation
The aim of the module is to develop the understanding of materials characterisation techniques to accurately determine the structure of materials at microscopic or atomic level.

Biomaterials 1 (Biomaterials for Tissue Engineering)
The aims of the module are to:
- to provide students with an understanding of the types of materials used in tissue engineering
- to relate the mechanical/physical/chemical properties of a material with its correct use in the different biological tissues
- to consider the design and development of devices to replace or augment damaged or diseased body parts.

The aim of the module is to impart the skills required:
- To plan, develop and conduct a research programme in the fields of Materials Science, Materials Engineering or Biomaterials Engineering; and

The aims of this module are for the student to work within a group to:
- use design principles, including an appreciation of design requirements, constraints and approaches, to design an automotive component;
- use the principles of materials selection to select and justify materials for specific applications;
- integrate their knowledge of materials properties, manufacturing techniques and engineering principles to produce a solution of a practical automotive design problem;
- contribute to the management of the team to present outputs of their work which demonstrate progress and meet specific objectives.
Biomedical Component Design
The aims of this module are for the student to:
- understand how to use basic design principles, including an appreciation of design requirements, constraints and approaches;
- use the principles of materials selection in conjunction with biological requirements, and the different approaches adopted in commercial material selection systems in a regulated industry;
- integrate their knowledge of biomaterials properties, manufacturing techniques and engineering principles in the solution of practical biomedical design problems.

Surface Engineering
The aim of the module is to give the student an appreciation of the importance of surfaces in engineering and how they may be modified by suitable coatings and treatments to produce the requisite characteristics to aid the successful operation of a given structure or component.
Advanced Principles of Materials
The aim of this module is to acquaint students with the fundamental theory of mechanical properties, transformations in materials and defects in crystals.
Advanced Processing Methods
The aims of the module are to:
- Increase the breadth and depth of students' knowledge of materials processing options
- Deepen the students' understanding of the consequences of selecting a processing route for a material's properties.
Nanomaterials
The aims of the module are to:
- explain the changes in the properties of a material as its size is reduced to the nanoscale
- provide students with knowledge of the range of nanomaterials, their synthesis, processing and application.
Optional
Entrepreneurship and Innovation
The aims of this module are:
- to present a range of issues on managing entrepreneurship and innovation.
- to present and discuss these issues for both large multinational corporations (MNCs) and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
- to present a range of frameworks and tools in support of managing entrepreneurship and innovation.
- to develop relevant transferable skills.
Sustainability, Recycling and Environmental Issues
The aims of the module are to provide the student with an appreciation of the resource and sustainability requirements of materials and related industries and to consider the needs of environment protection through environmental control of pollution, materials sustainability, recycling, and controlled disposal.
Automotive Crash Protection
This module provides a detailed understanding of the interactions between engineering and human tolerance to impact as they relate to the crash protection of vehicle occupants and other road users. An introduction to impact biomechanics and crash protection standards will also be provided.

Industrial Case Studies
The aim of this module is to provide students with a broad experience in the application of materials science and engineering in the context of particular industrial case studies and the associated issues of manufacturing, economic and legislative constraints. The module provides a mechanism for the integration of the knowledge gained in the various specialist modules by its practical application in the solution of 'real-life' engineering problems.
Composite Materials
The aim of the module is to provide students with a knowledge of the properties, processing and applications of composite materials and the development of new composites.
Functional Materials
The aims of the module are to:
- Introduce the principles of functional behaviour. Examples may include superconductivity, magnetism, semiconductivity, responsive polymers;
- Provide students with knowledge of the materials science that underlies the functional behaviours covered.
Optional
Biomaterials 2 (Biomaterials for Drug Delivery)
The aims of the module are to:
- to provide students with an understanding of the types of materials used in controlled delivery
- to relate the mechanical/physical/chemical properties of a material with its correct use for different types of delivery
- to consider the design and development of new materials and structures that can target delivery to specific organs/tissues and in specific timeframes.

The University Language Centre provides a range of modules in French, German, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese from beginners' level upwards. You may take these language modules as part of your degree, enter the programme at your level of competence and work upwards one semester at a time.

How you'll be assessed
Students are assessed by a mixture of coursework and written examinations.
This will vary from module to module, but overall the approximate ratio is 60/40 Exams/Coursework. Modules containing design-orientated work, individual and group projects are also assessed by oral presentation and in some cases poster presentation.
Placement year
This course includes the option to complete a paid year working in industry. Our close links with industrial partners enable us to provide our students with considerable help in sourcing and securing their placement.
Placements are an excellent opportunity to gain real-world experience and apply the knowledge from your degree in practice. Many of our students return with a much better understanding of the wider context of the modules they have studied and generally perform better in their final year(s) of study.
In addition, the placement year will allow students to ‘test drive’ an industrial sector. It will give students insight into what they can expect from a graduate position before having to commit to a longer-term career. Placements are a great stepping-stone into a permanent job. We see many of our students return to their placement employer as a graduate because they have demonstrated their worth to the organisation.
Please note that whilst the Department offers great support for students to find a placement, it is ultimately the student's responsibility to source and secure their industrial placement.
Additional award
By undertaking a year on professional placement or working in industry, you will gain an additional award alongside your final qualification. If you undertake a professional placement year you will gain a Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS) or if you complete a year in industry you will gain a Diploma in Industrial Studies (DIS).

Materials students enjoy a generous amount of hands-on practical work involving specialist equipment and laboratory spaces.
The Department of Materials is housed in S-Building, which contains extensive polymer processing laboratories, IT labs, and the world-leading ºÚÁÏÍø Materials Characterisation Centre.
You will also have access to STEMLab, a state-of-the-art laboratory facility. This forms part of a wider £25 million investment in the West Park of our campus, the home of our Engineering Schools. It includes an adjacent student learning and teaching hub. STEMLab allows us to offer new ways to learn and collaborate. Examples include ‘drop-in’ engineering workshops, teaching laboratories, workshops, computer-aided design and rapid prototyping facilities, a design studio and informal learning spaces.
These enhanced facilities will further increase our ability to train and develop skilled graduates who are targeted by major employers from across the world.

Applicants are usually selected based on their UCAS application, but in exceptional cases, an interview may be required. The Certificat d’Enseignement Secondaire Supérieur (CESS) and Diploma van Secundair Onderwijs (DSO) are both acceptable qualifications for direct entry into first year undergraduate courses. For students tasking the Avgångsbetyg / Slutbetyg från Gymnasieskola, typical offers are normally based on an average score from 2500 credits with an ‘A’ counting as 20 points, a ‘B’ counting as 17.5 points, a ‘C’ counting as 15 points etc. Typical offers range from 16.0 to 18.8 average from 2500 credits.
Where courses have specific subject requirements, an ‘A’ or ‘B’ grade would normally be required from 2 relevant subject modules within the Slutbetyg.
Students who took the Avgångsbetyg / Slutbetyg från Gymnasieskola under the old grading system are considered on a case by case basis with most courses requiring a majority of ‘VG’ and ‘MVG’ grades.

United States of America
For students studying in the USA, typical offers for entry onto undergraduate level courses are based on obtaining 3.2/4.0 GPA in the High School Graduation Diploma, in addition to a combination of any three of the following:
- Advanced Placement (AP) Exam
- IB Higher Levels
- College level class credit (should normally be taken in Grade 12 for one semester, and be equivalent to 3 credits/units in an academic subject)
- Honors classes (should be taken for a full academic year in either Grade 11 or Grade 12)
Where courses have a specific A Level subject requirement this must be achieved in the relevant AP exam or IB Higher Level. Where AP is used to meet an A Level Maths subject requirement AP Calculus BC would be required.

UK tuition fees align with the applicable fee caps set by the UK government, and as such they are subject to changes made to the agreed cap in a specific year. Tuition fees are reviewed annually by the University and are likely to increase to take into account inflationary pressures.
Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessment and operating University facilities such as the library, IT equipment and other support services. University fees and charges can be paid in advance and there are several methods of payment, including online payments and payment by instalment.
Additional costs
Materials students are provided with an excellent general Materials textbook, a laboratory workbook, a lab coat and other necessary protective equipment when required. However, your tuition fee doesn’t cover everything. For instance, it doesn’t cover the cost of any stationery, printing, additional books or re-assessments which you might need.
