Laughter Club

About this event

Laughing to feel good, laughing for no reason, laughing for a break in a busy day.

The University Chaplaincy hosts a monthly laughter club for staff across the ºÚÁÏÍø Campus.

What's it all about?

was started in Mumbai, India in 1995 by Dr Madan Kataria. He knew that the body produces feel-good hormones like endorphins when we laugh. He realised the body can’t tell the difference if we laugh because something is funny or because we just laugh. He combined the laughter with Pranayama Yoga deep breathing. Laughter Yoga is now practised all over the world in over 120 countries with 1000s of participants.

Session format

Each 45min session begins with a brief introduction to Laughter Yoga followed by a series of interactive laughter and movement exercises- such as clapping, moving around the room, lying down and laughing. Although participants might feel out of their comfort zone or perhaps self-conscious, we encourage you to join in as much as you feel comfortable to do so. Many of our more regular Laughter Club attendees are more comfortable to enable newer participants to join in more easily.

You're advised to bring some water with you, a small cushion/something to rest your head on for lying on the floor and wear comfortable clothing (although no actual yoga will take place!) Please note: this is aerobic exercise so it’s not recommended for anyone with uncontrolled heart disease or epilepsy, incontinence, hernia, recent abdominal surgery.

Dates of the sessions:

  • 12 September

  • 17 October

  • 21 November

Come along, let go, have fun, and feel good for the rest of the day!
